The Brotherhood of Sonic Love (Denmark) – Wet Lips (single)

A return visit from The Brotherhood of Sonic Love, whose ‘Golden Spells’ title track from the album of that name went under the microscope last December in what we described as a pre-Christmas fix of hard driving rock, from Denmark’s “notorious” rock band, adding “they are a little on the dark side to say the least, writing their material about such happy topics as broken dreams, death, inner demons and the lives that have been added and lost in the members’ inner and social circles in recent years.”

Just so you know what to expect.

This non-album single, ‘Wet Lips’, was recorded at a studio session, while they were waiting for the final mix of the album. That suggests something that failed to make the cut on the album or which was recorded as an afterthought but often there is surprising quality in those throwaways, if that is what it is.

If you like bass and drums working in unison to set the tone for a song (as opposed to drum ‘n bass) this is for you.

It’s dark, moody, dispiriting, everything you might anticipate and you can’t get more downbeat than “I’m the leaves falling from the trees/ I’m the cold, cold winter breeze”  but – and I hope they don’t take this the wrong way – ever so slightly camp.

What prompts me to say that is the middle section where singer Asger Westh intones “Should I put some lipstick on?/One more kiss and then we’re done” followed by “when I come for you/I’ll wear my high-heeled shoes” and I couldn’t get an image of Dr. Frank-N-Furter from The Rocky Horror Picture Show out of my mind, cavorting around in fishnet tights. (Him, not me).

And musically it has the stamp of Alice Cooper right the way through it. Cooper meets Frank-N-Furter. The mind boggles.

Asger says the song totally changed character as they started to record it, prompting him to stay awake all night writing a complete new lyric for it to be sung the next day.

I can’t imagine what it was changed from but I’ll take this version any day.

The Brotherhood of Sonic Love is:

Mathias Ejlerskov Lyzell, guitar

Daniel Damkilde Christensen, bass

Per Mølgaard Jørgensen, drums

Asger Westh, vocals
