Ådselæder (Jens Hansen) has paid us a visit before, as a member of the duo Vi, which we featured at the beginning of November.
My take on Vi was that they were thoughtful, studious types with, in the EP track that we examined, hints of 1970’s prog arrangements, and there does seem to be a lot of that about at the moment.
Now Jens turns up again, this time in his solo persona, Ådselæder, which means scavenger, and which suggests something harder. His strapline is ‘Horror and weed’ which leaves much to the imagination.
I wasn’t sure what to expect here but not ‘metal’, which is one accreditation that is offered to him online. It isn’t metal, for sure.
Neither can I you tell you if there actually is an ‘Isle of Yorsmael’ or if it is the sort of made up place name so beloved of the prog business.
It could be an anagram of course, or a play on a place title like Israel.
It is highly experimental with a great degree of trickery employed to change pace and direction (some of it seems to be played backwards for example).
There is counterpoint between the main, calm, repeating four note theme and the various extravagant, flighty noises off, as if suggestive of the resistance of the original inhabitants to an invasion by a new breed of settler.
I must be honest and say I failed to get a solid handle on the meaning but in my own defence there are few clues and a lot of leeway for speculation.
The track is only 1 minute 47 seconds long but in that short duration it does generate more than enough to pose questions, to fashion a desire to learn more about this place, whether it exists on a Google map or merely as a figment of his imagination.
Will we do so by way of future tracks or an EP? We shall see.
