Laurits Severin (Denmark) – Saw in You (single/ future EP track)

No, it’s ‘Saw in You’, not sawing you, this isn’t a theme from the gory Saw film franchise although if anyone treated you like poor old Laurits was treated by his ex you might seriously consider a trip to the tool cupboard.

Laurits Severin is a young Aarhus-based artist who’s quickly making his name known on the Danish music circuit, specialising in catchy pop songs that, if this one is anything to judge by, can be a little on the dark side, too.

And a clean-cut, upright young man by the look of it. The type society often dumps on, a Caspar Milquetoast that deserves much better.

His gripe is about a messy and painful break up by the look of it, having given his all to comfort someone overwhelmed by past issues – as you do – only to find that after they’ve sucked you dry of compassion –and probably Krone – they reward you with the bum’s rush.

So he ends up wondering if it was worth it and how he was ever attracted to that individual in the first place.

Yep, we’ve all been there Laurits and I suspect you have been, too. Songs like this typically come directly from a broken heart, not from a third party.

The song catches your attention quickly with a smart piano/synth melody underpinned by a beating bass and snare drum heart and he sings in a voice that suggests he might be a young teenager discovering unrequited or abandoned love for the first time and struggling to get to grips with it.

His diction is clear and he writes down to Earth, no-nonsense lyrics.

“You made me believe in fairy tales/oh, at least that’s what I thought/and now it makes me sick just thinking of you/can’t believe the shit that you have pulled me through”.

For those that might argue that lacks sophistication, when did a teenager ever talk with it? It’s raw, believable, off-the-street straight talk and directly relevant to the kids.

And remember Greg Lake used a line about fairy stories in ‘I believe in Father Christmas’ and look how much airplay that gets. Even when it isn’t Christmas.

The only thing I don’t get is why it wasn’t released on Valentine’s Day to a huge fanfare so thousands of youngsters who haven’t received a card can sob their heart out to it.

‘Saw in You’ is the second single from Laurits Severin’s forthcoming debut EP ’FEELINGS’, a collection of songs that each explore different aspects of love—from betrayal and sorrow to joy and hope. The EP will be released on 4th April.
