We round off what became an extended Valentine’s Day into the entire weekend with what sounds like a more traditional compilation from Denmark’s nikkipax (Christina Mallou Linde).
After all, during this lovey-dovey weekend so far we’ve had a couple of songs dealing with broken hearts that won’t mend, which is a tad depressing.
The Mallou part of her name sounds une peux française, n’est-ce-pas? And that led me to believe that this song, ‘Moonlight Lotion’, might be a little more sensuous and romantic. And musically it is just that.
The song is presented in a similar fashion to that of the US singer/songwriter Holly Palmer – someone you’ve probably never heard of but the most romantically intense female performer I’ve encountered. Check out her ‘That’s why they call it Rome’ then contrast and compare. If anything, this is even more soulful.
The piano introduction alone has you turning down the lights and pouring a couple of glasses of wine while her vocal fills are a delight.
However, lyrically – well that’s another matter. You get the first impression of what’s coming from the introductory strapline she uses – ‘Why stay if you know it’s bad?’
It’s about the very real dangers of falling in love with the idea of love – the notion rather than the reality – which gets under your skin like a malign lotion and blinds you to the dangers of a bad relationship which becomes the ‘norm’ in your life and from which it is very hard to escape even if you wanted to, just because you want to be in love.
“I tried to put some truth to your lies/I think I got away just in time.”
It’s all the more effective because it is so smoochy. You could imagine your local nightclub’s DJ playing the Valentine’s Night party out to this song, the sozzled party-goers in each other’s arms, and tout le monde ignorant of the dangers being spelled out.
And guess what – she sings from life experience. Somehow I think you’ll pick up on that just from listening to it.
‘Moonlight Lotion’ is the first single from nikkipax’s forthcoming second EP, ‘The Dandelion Project – part 2’.
