Nille Nyc (Denmark) – Grown up party (single)

Nille Nyc (Pernille Nyc-Jensen) was here not that long ago, back in November, and she came with a message. Namely that what truly matters in life are presence, peace, and gratitude. Not bling, which she proved in her last song, ‘NEVADA’, by cleaning out a New York Prada store only to discover that it had zero effect on her mental wellbeing.

She’s set out her stall as a philosopher and in this latest single her concerns shift towards the stigma around aging, and especially in the music industry.

That’s something she probably has had experience of herself, having only entered the business as she turned 40 and having previously been an engineer, and it isn’t the first time that I’ve experienced it on behalf of an artist so to speak. I once met one, she has been featured in NMC several times, that was terrified of anyone discovering her age (46 I think) in case that had a negative impact on her career.

Seven or eight years later she’s still writing great music and doesn’t look a day older and anyway her deep, thoughtful songs wouldn’t suit a 16-year-old ‘next big thing’.

But to return to Nille, she’s written what is a nostalgic and humorous birthday anthem for grown-ups, celebrating life experience, authenticity, and going where the box tickers dare not tread.

It’s my party and I won’t cry if I don’t want to we might call it.

To Nille, whether or not she has any guests at her party, she’s celebrating her life experience, her retained authenticity, and the joy of breaking free from society’s restricting “boxes”.

The song gains additional meaning when you discover that she wrote it on her birthday during a Covid lockdown. But rather than being down in the dumps she found the experience to be enlightening and that she was sufficiently comfortable in her own skin to forego the traditional ‘party experience’ and just chill on her lonesome.

Speaking as a singleton myself (a phrase coined by Bridget Jones I believe, who is back in fashion, perhaps she and Nille should meet up for a chat and compare notes), I can sympathise with Nille and where she’s ‘coming from’.

Musically, ‘Grown up party’ has an 80s vibe to it which dates it to the same era as Stewart and Gaskin’s rendition of ‘It’s my party’ – although Lesley Gore’s original is a child of the 60s. Nille’s song would have slipped easily into either era.

And she knows already how to engineer a hit record. It has a chorus that will stick in your head until your next birthday.
