Eckman & Borelius (Sweden) – You proved me wrong (single)

Sounds like two-thirds of a firm of solicitors. Or the next generation of balcony hecklers from The Muppet Show who followed on from Statler & Waldorf.

They are a duo from Malmö but their sound is international.  Johan Eckman is the pianist and Tobias Borelius the vocalist.

A while ago I was comparing an artist to Dean Friedman and I get a similar vibe from these two. By that I mean that their sound is classical. It spans decades and even generations. If you think back to US artists like Glen Campbell, Tony Bennett, John Denver and Harry Nilsson I reckon you’ll start to get a flavour of Borelius’ calculated, smooth, honeyed delivery.

Incidentally, he’s also involved with other bands, but we’ll skip on that for now.

Musically, ‘You proved me wrong’s simple piano melodyis punctuated by a luscious string arrangement which I’m guessing is synthesiser generated or a mix of synths and strings but which does the trick whichever way. My only regret is that it fades into an early death where I think it might justifiably have continued a little longer into a grander ending.

Lyrically, the song concerns encountering a mentally strong individual who surprised their peers by overcoming obstacles and associated fears along the way to be what they are now.  That is awfully John Denver-like, isn’t it?

Even if you choose to ignore the message and merely listen to the music it offers wraparound comfort like a cup of Horlicks before you retire to bed to fall asleep to the monotonous repetition of the shipping forecast on Radio 4.

Goodnight.
