Hills and Trees (Denmark) – Endless (single)

I received a teasing message from Hills and Trees (Martin Fabrcius Buchwald) about his third and latest single release ‘Endless’, in which he pointed out that his first one, ‘Under the Apple tree’ saw the light of day when he was 43 and that he has just returned to the music scene now, after four years, and was ready to release music once again on the world but that this time it would be “on my own terms.”

I don’t know what that indicates but it does hint at a clash of priorities with record companies, something we’ve often come across.

Most times I‘ve experienced something like that – if indeed it is the case here – the artist has gone on to produce work that, while at odds with the preferences of the label, is exactly what the punters wanted.

‘Endless’, he says is about surrendering to one true love, a monogamous relationship forever and ever, Amen, if you like.

He identifies his style online as ‘Ambient Folk’ and I’m hard pressed to find a better description. It could be the work of Brian Eno with lyrics added by Enya, but the more useful analogy I can make is with 10cc.

There is the same quality in the production here as you find in ‘I’m not in love’ which must have cost a fortune to make. And there’s at least as pleasing a tune.

Smooth, powerful, uplifting. It’s got it all.
