Jonsson United (Sweden) – Flyger (single)

The central Swedish Jonsson United returns to NMC after two years with what they describe as “a song that has been maturing for quite some time.”

Like a good wine, I’m hoping.

It looks like they spent a long period on this one, observing that “There has been the beginning of a verse and a chorus melody, but it never managed to become a complete song until now. The band has turned and twisted most things before the pieces fell into place.”

‘Flyger’ means flying and the comment above suggests the maintenance was done properly and the aircraft stalled somewhere in flight before they brought it back under control.

To the band it has more of a road movie feeling as they put it; about letting go and daring to take a chance even if you aren’t sure you really want to.

Well – who dares, wins – as the saying goes.

There are seven of them, I’ve made the football team analogy too many times before to repeat it again, but they are definitely flying in formation here with what is the heaviest sound I’ve experienced from them yet – but still offering a strong melody line – and in some sections it could even be a football or ice hockey supporters’ song.

And to top it all they’ve found a way to incorporate a piece of history; a vintage Korg T3, a make that dates back to 1988, which was a favourite of the Pet Shop Boys, features a built-in arpeggiator and – get this – has a joystick!

Chocks away, Tally-ho! Bandits at 12 o’clock!

Next challenge, old chap – a song in English…
