Who was it that sang ‘Marry me’? It was St Vincent wasn’t it, in her formative artistic years before she became obsessed with fuzzy guitar shredding.
Now Joselin takes that notion a stage further with a piece of grammar that Grammarly would probably disapprove of – ‘Marry myself’.
But there’s a twist in the tale. It appears that Joselin would betroth herself to her alter ego as a sign that she is able to accept herself just the way she is.
And that is important because Joselin was recently diagnosed with ADHD.
She was here a few months back after signing to her label, Ninetone, and after entering the music business through a distinctly academic route, with spells at colleges in the US and Norway, with a song, ‘Elegantly’, which was just that despite its subject matter of struggling to recover from a broken relationship while the other half seems to be able to do it effortlessly.
I remarked last time how she is able to create a high quality, well structured Eurovision-like song effortlessly herself and this is another example.
Two brief observations. Firstly, listen to it at least twice. There is a lot going on in its (too brief) two minutes and eight seconds with several little vocal tricks including a moment when she talks directly with that alter ego “as I marry myself.”
Secondly, and weirdly perhaps but check it out and make of it what you will, the song it reminded me of – straight off – in the chorus, is Daz Sampson’s UK 2006 Eurovision entry ‘Teenage Life’, a sublime tongue in cheek hip hop masterpiece that garnered us the traditional nul points if I recall but was still our best effort in that maligned, damned competition since Bucks Fizz’s girls had their skirts ripped off.
I can offer no greater compliment than that.
I’ve already said once this week that another Nordic song could make some waves in the UK if it picks up airplay and here’s another one already.
