King Hüsky (Norway) – Lately I’ve been thinking about your mother (single/future album track)

It was evident from King Hüsky’s (Vidar Landa) last single, ‘Running’ that he is a little, shall we say, out of the ordinary.

The fact that he is the guitarist and songwriter for a metal band yet can conjure up these comparatively lightweight and highly melodic soft rock tracks suggests his variance from the norm.

Last time out he was ‘Running’ from we know not what. This time it might well be from his girlfriend after telling her ‘Lately I’ve been thinking about your mother’ with all that implies.

It could be completely harmless of course as he goes out of his way to tell us how he misses the ratatouille and couscous she used to rustle up for him (or them) but on the other hand the repeated line that there was a ‘loving spirit in the house’ suggests something deeper.

Perhaps it’s just the workings of my own weird mind but I sense there’s a Chapter 2 to this waiting somewhere in the wings.

I can’t pin down his style either. Lyrically, it’s the sort of song that Madness could have delivered but not in this manner. Or perhaps The Undertones; or Feargal Sharkey on his own. But musically it’s more in the way of the whimsical nature of The Divine Comedy.

What I have to grant him is that whatever he serves up it entices you to want more, to see what persona he adopts next.

And we’ll soon find out as his eponymous debut album comes via Oslo’s Hype City on Friday 9th May.

Form an orderly queue now and walk, don’t run.
