In the nicest way Lucifer Sunshine are anachronistic. They belong in another time and place.
The ones I have in mind especially are San Francisco and 1969 respectively. They sound like they should be playing to an assembled mass of ‘Nam dodgers and stoned hippies in Candlestick Park just as counterculture was about to run its course by way of a damned festival to the east but all was still peace ‘n love, man.
They even look the part, too.
They are a psych-pop band from Stockholm, content to bend genres into their own style of dreamy, psychedelic pop. This, their latest single ‘My Immunity’, is the first to promote Lucifer Sunshine’s forthcoming album ‘The Woodland Man & the Sky Theatre Show’ which is due in late 2024.
The band name partly comes from inspiration of a song by Nirvana called ‘Christopher Lucifer’ and them being fans of baroque and sunshine pop.
Immunity from what?
Lead vocalist Alex says, ‘My immunity’ is a song I wrote in my teens. It’s based on the themes of isolation, despair and hope. We went for a warm comforting sound on this one. The song originally ended in a melancholic outro to suggest a never ending cycle but in this version the song ends on a positive note.”
Reading into that, the cycle presumably goes from isolation and despair back to the same, via hope; the sort of story that a band with Lucifer in their title should excel at.
But in fact it’s the reverse, with those reassuringly sweet melodies, verging on gospel in some sections, topped off with a falsetto lead vocal, perpetuating the notion that all is really for the best in this best of all possible worlds, as long as you’re prepared to take a positive outlook. You don’t need no shot in the arm of any kind, man when you’ve got the faith.
