Nightwish has, in the last 24 hours, released publicly a video of the making of their most recent album, ‘Yesterwynde’, which saw the light of day in September, the third in a like-minded trilogy of humanistic philosophical albums by the symphonic metal band and their 10th studio album in all.
Regular readers will know by now that for numerous reasons I consider this band to be the #1 in the world and I appreciate the effort they put into making these videos (mainly by their regular filmmaker, Ville Lipiäinen, as here).
The 45-minute video is replete with philosophical observations as you might expect, especially from chief writer Tuomas Holopainen, which are particularly pertinent at this time of the year.
But it is also revealing in many other ways, for example the understated concern that Floor Jansen shows about the ability of her voice to hold up and the muttered expression of hope that they might tour again “soon” by Kai Hahto (at present that isn’t scheduled until at least 2027).
None of them is getting younger, most are well into their 50s now and keeping up with the rigourous demands of extensive touring with a highly dramatic live show may soon be beyond them.
That is why I quietly expect their ‘no touring’ mantra to be dropped sooner rather than later.
Floor Jansen also comments on how she had to adjust her ‘belly’ post-childbirth to accommodate the intense demands of the new songs and managed it in a few weeks, modestly omitting to mention that she was back on stage three weeks after a breast cancer operation in 2022!
Meanwhile, the personalities of some of the band members are revealed. The deep thoughtfulness of Holopainen is already known but not so much the mature confidence of Hahto and the new bassist Jukka Koskinen, which contrasts with the personalities of the ‘jokers’ – the introverted one (guitarist Emppu Vuorinen) and the extroverted one (Troy Donockley).
It all makes for a fascinating 45 minutes and a wonderful introduction to the making of a best-selling album.
