There’s a contradiction here. Nille Nyc has had a tough time of things of things recently, struggling with “difficult emotions” and finding it hard to be at peace with herself. Hence this single ‘NEVADA’, also a track on her forthcoming EP which is about starting over afresh, concerns “finding peace and calm within, in a world full of distractions and the constant pursuit of happiness”.
Even though she sounds a little like the Material Girl in parts of this song she isn’t recommending actually being one:
“I cried in Nevada, went to New York
Bought me some Prada
But it didn’t work”.
Her mantra is that listeners should pause and reflect on what truly matters in life— namely presence, peace, and gratitude, which we all seek, but often struggle to live by when life moves quickly.
The contradiction is that ‘NEVADA’ is hardly peaceful. It comes fast out of the blocks and is played at the sort of pace I’d expect to find in Las Vegas, as you are ushered from casino to slot machines to cabaret show and back to the casino, all the time losing cash like it’s going out of fashion and finding intense unhappiness.
But, as she says, “we need music and dancing in this crazy world”.
Now it looks like that happened by chance. She’d gone into the studio to finish another song but the mood within it, coupled with her mood, prompted her to record a high-energy track.
And that doesn’t bother me anyway. How many songs I have heard over the years in which unhappy or distressing stories are being told by way of an upmarket tune and lyrics? Some bands even specialise in them.
She’s a latecomer to the music business, quitting her job as a civil engineer at the age of 38 but that just goes to prove that it’s never too late to make your mark.
Bursting with energy and danceable but carrying a message too, ‘NEVADA’ is for those that like to be a high roller and how to learn to roll with it too.
‘NEVADA’ is released on November 15th.
