Now you all know that this is a serious journal, read in boardrooms, government offices, private club reading rooms and redbrick university libraries across the globe. Honest.
But as an avid buyer of The Sun newspaper so I could go straight to Page 3 and ogle today’s topless model before they clothed them in 2015 (I’m so unreconstructed aren’t I?) I could hardly turn away from an invitation from Rebecca & Fiona to examine their greatest tits, could I?
I hadn’t come across them before (the pair…of singers) but it’s clear that they are a big name in Denmark, perhaps something along the lines of those Romanian Cheeky Girls in the UK a decade or so ago.
They have been part of the Swedish music scene since 2007, initially as DJs, and have achieved success internationally. They have released three albums and are two-time Swedish Grammy Award winners. They have their own label, Big Romantic Music, and mix influences from the dance scene with pop and electronic in their music.
The duo has named the EP in their own humourous way, but the title also alludes to the EP’s content – new cover versions of songs by artists who ‘shaped’ them musically and made without any rules. They include an updated interpretation of Lili & Susie’s hit ‘Oh Mama’, a collaboration with Dr. Alban, and works borrowed from Adolphson & Falk.
The sample track is the first, ABBA’s ‘Take a Chance’, seemingly expressly approved by none other than Benny Andersson himself. Now when it is endorsed at that level you have to sit up and take notice.
The way it starts off, with a super heavy beat that never flags, you’d think it was going to be a metal version God forbid, but before long it settles into an electro-pop adaptation of the classic but one so doused in retro that it could be blaring off those huge skyscraper advertising screens in ‘Blade Runner.’
Actually, it is pretty good, and it’s a whole lot better than watching holograms of ABBA at their London ‘show’, and it’s out just in time for the Ibiza holiday season.
‘Rebecca & Fiona’s Greatest Tits’ will be released on Wednesday 28 June.
The EP release will be accompanied by a release party that will take over the town of Västerås (home to Loreen if you didn’t know, I wonder if she’ll show up?)
