Sagofrön (Sweden) – Allt (single)

Sagofrön (Jimmy Almén) is very handy at painting pictures with his songs. He was here previously with ‘Dröm’ (‘Dream’), a variety of dystopian nightmare, a metaphor for nuclear war, or more parochially perhaps for the Ukraine war.

He doesn’t specify the precise meaning of ‘Allt’ (All) but it seems to be referring, in the conversation with his child, to knowledge and how people use it, and how it can appear to be different things at different times in the life cycle. No-one can know everything (allt) but anyone can interpret what they know in meaningful ways at any point.

It’s the thoughtful stuff we’ve come to expect from Sagofrön

The song is pleasant enough, as lullaby-like as its predecessor, but in reality it is a catalyst for the lyrics, an English translation of which is copied below:

ALL

“My child said to me: you know it all. All about space, all about fauna, flora, you know it all.

There is nothing you don’t know: you can whistle, make cookies, you know stuff…you know it all.

But knowledge is a kind of illusion…that can be promising…it can be intense, but often relational.

No-one has ever heard…of a child, a small child…who knows it all…who knows it all.

But just like it happened back when I grew older…also this time the image broke. The world around you widens and you realise: neither father nor mother knows everything you think…the years pass by…and the child understands: that there are so much more…that you don’t see right away…everywhere in this world. So you pick and you choose, acquire more and more…by what and those who teach you.

I said to my child: you know it all. All about space, all about fauna, flora, you know it all.

There is nothing you don’t know: you can whistle, make cookies, you know stuff…you know it all…”
