Soldråper’s second single, ‘Slik du ser meg’ (‘The way you see me’), is to do with self esteem and the desire that some folks have to be seen for exactly what they are and what they amount to.
Their ‘worth’ if you like.
That isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, letting other people get so close to you and most folk would probably prefer to continue with at least a degree of pretence.
But all seems to be for the good here, according to the song’s main and often repeated line, “No one sees me as me, like you”.
The song gets off to pounding bass introduction and a jazz influence is quickly evident.
The singer’s voice (I believe it is Mary April Rose Sønsteby, who is also the main songwriter) sits nicely with an angular musical arrangement which is catchy from the start and gets catchier still as it ramps up to something close to an anthem by the time it reaches its conclusion with all instruments and voices going at it, full on.
I’m going to be so bold as to imagine a new genre here and call it math-jazz.
While it’s always a pain to translate lyrics into English I’m glad they are releasing in Norwegian, which does have a lilt to it and makes for a superior version I’m sure to an English alternative.
There is plenty of variety in what they write. Their previous (and first) release, ‘Den fyste snøen’(‘The first snow’) is a ballad and one that features a very appealing piece of what is close to classical piano and ends with a multi instrumental jam.
And Ms. Sønsteby has a soft, gentle voice to die for. The sort you’d like your doctor to have. Or your psychiatrist.
Soldråper is based in Kristiansand in the south of Norway, and we’ve had a couple of bands from that part of the world recently; all of them top class.
It consists of five young musicians from different parts of the country and their style is to explore themes of growing up, love, and relationships – both the good and the bad – and drawing on personal experiences and reflections.
The self-titled EP is planned for release in May 2025 and they say it will be an emotional musical journey.
I suspect we’ll be hearing a lot more from them.
